Lively Qiaotou

Lively Qiaotou — where learning is something you enjoy.

Those six words are painted on the arch of our front gate, so they are the first thing a child reads on the way in and the last thing they read on the way out. Qiaotou Elementary School stands in Qiaotou Village, Shetou Township — the place Taiwan calls the home of socks. Yuanlin City is just to the north and Yongjing Township to the west, which makes this a well-connected corner of Changhua and a lively one.

Two markets stand almost on our doorstep: the guava wholesale market that Shetou is known for, and the Qiaotou village market. So do three busy temples — Tianmen Temple, dedicated to Mazu and built nearly three hundred years ago; Zhen’an Temple, the grand hall of the Three Mountain Kings; and Chuanfu Temple, home of the Earth God. Most families here farm — rice, guava, nursery plants — or run small businesses, and the neighborhood is a plain-spoken, warm-hearted one.

The campus itself covers about two hectares — room enough for a full running track, a covered court, a pond, a play structure, a wisteria walk and a great many trees. The teaching team here works at rooting health and energy and whole character in the children, and at building a campus of many kinds of learning, so that what grows out of it is a new generation with creative thinking and an international outlook.

The main gate at Qiaotou — a cream arch spanning the entrance with 活力橋頭 享受愛學習 lettered across it in green and red and an LED ticker beneath, a tall mosaic pillar to the right carrying the school's full Chinese name vertically with a butterfly set into its head, a low mosaic noticeboard wall of flowers and butterflies to the left, and a red-brick path and a mosaic screen wall visible inside, under a blue and white sky 橋頭國小穿堂的馬賽克照壁:兩根白色磁磚方柱之間鑲著一整面碎磁磚拼貼的海洋圖畫,旗魚、海豚、虎鯨與比目魚在藍色海浪中游動,上方拼出旭日光芒;左右柱面各以毛筆字直書一句對聯,牆前擺著三只寫著「財」「福」「春」的陶甕,柱上方掛著一台紅綠雙色的 LED 跑馬燈 The mosaic screen wall in the entrance hall at Qiaotou — a whole seascape in broken tile set between two white-tiled columns, with a sailfish, dolphins, an orca and a flatfish swimming through blue waves and a rising sun radiating above, a line of brush calligraphy running down each column, three ceramic jars lettered 財 福 春 standing in front, and a red-and-green LED ticker mounted overhead
Our name, hidden at the head of a couplet

A pair of lines runs down the two columns of the mosaic wall in our entrance hall. Read the first character of each and you get the name of the school: 橋 · 頭. Qiaotou’s fine students carry forward what their teachers give them; its first-rate talents carry the school’s name out into the world.

Lively Qiaotou — enjoy it, love it, learn.

The Qiaotou Child

Five things we hope a child leaves here carrying.

A school vision is easy to write and hard to check. Ours is deliberately written as a picture of a child rather than a description of a school, because a child is something you can actually look at: healthy and full of energy, whole in character, used to learning in more than one way, able to think of something new, and aware that the world is bigger than Shetou.

Healthy
A Body With Energy in It
Whole Character
The Kind of Person, Not Just the Marks
Many Ways
More Than One Way to Be Good at School
Creative
Able to Think of Something New
International
A World Bigger Than the Village
Wings
The Belief Underneath All Five

To get there we work on four things at once, and they are ordinary enough to be done every week rather than announced once a year: character, deeply rooted; balanced learning; health promotion; and reading, put down like a root. Qiaotou children grow up in a warm and carefully made place, and what they pick up there they mostly pick up without noticing — good examples in the people around them, reading in the air of the building, energy in the space to run, and a school that lets each child grow towards what they are actually good at.

The stage at Qiaotou seen head-on — a semicircular sky-blue canopy painted inside with white clouds, a backdrop mural of seven children running and leaping on green grass with a teacher standing among them arms wide, school buildings and coconut palms painted behind them, and a tiled apron below carrying a gold 橋, a relief of the school crest, and a gold 頭 橋頭國小操場全景:前景是一片綠色草地與紅色 PU 跑道,正對面是一整排兩層樓的白色教學樓,中央嵌著半圓形的天藍色司令台,樓前種著一整排修剪過的行道樹,國旗在左側旗桿上飄著,孩子們穿著藍白運動服在草地與樹下三三兩兩地活動,畫面上緣垂下一支老樹枝椏 The sports field at Qiaotou — green grass and a red synthetic track in the foreground, a long two-storey white teaching block opposite with the semicircular sky-blue stage set into the middle of it, a row of clipped trees along its front, the national flag flying from a pole at the left, children in blue-and-white PE kit scattered across the grass and under the trees, and the branch of an old tree hanging into the top of the frame
Seven children, painted where the school assembles

The mural on our stage is not a landscape and not a slogan. It is children running — on the grass, in front of this building, with a teacher standing in the middle of them with both arms open. The letters set into the tiling below spell out and with the school crest between them. It is a fair summary of the place: the name, the adults, and the running.

Seven Balloons on a Wall

Our school rules are seven balloons rising over a rainbow.

Most schools keep their rules on a noticeboard. Ours are set in broken tile, on three curved panels beside the field, where each one is written inside a heart-shaped balloon floating up off a rainbow. Two figurines of children stand at either end. It is a mosaic, so it will still be there when this year’s six-graders bring their own children back to look at it.

Read together, they describe a child rather than a rule: Qiaotou children are polite, keep things clean, keep order, take responsibility, get things done, help others often, and enjoy a challenge. The last one is the one worth noticing — it is unusual for a school to put liking difficulty on the same list as tidying up.

The mosaic motto wall at Qiaotou — three curved concrete panels tiled all over in pale blue sky with a rainbow arching across them, the left panel carrying a green sapling and the word 校訓 in blue, and seven heart-shaped balloons in red, yellow and pink floating across the middle and right panels lettered 有禮貌, 愛整潔, 守秩序, 負責任, 會做事, 常助人 and 樂挑戰, with grass and a paved path below
Be Polite
Keep It Clean
Keep Order
Take Responsibility
Get Things Done
Help Others Often
Enjoy a Challenge
Polite. Tidy. Orderly. Responsible. Capable. Helpful. And up for a challenge.

Reading, Put Down Like a Root

Four places on this campus where a book is the point.

閱讀扎根reading, put down like a root — is one of the four things this school works on continuously, and the way you can tell it is real is that it has been given space. Not one library and a poster, but a forest-themed reading room, a community reading station, an open-air pavilion with a bookcase in it, and a wall where the story is escaping from the book.

The reading room at Qiaotou seen in a wide panorama — green cloud-shaped light panels hanging from the ceiling, a sculpted tree in the middle of the room, timber cabin and tree-trunk shapes built along the walls with bench seating, pale teal walls above a wood-grain floor, curved wooden bookcases and reading tables in the center, and shelves of children's books beneath tall windows
The Forest Reading Room

A room designed as a small wood: cloud lights on the ceiling, a tree in the middle, cabins along the wall and low benches under the windows. It is where the school put its money on the idea that where you read changes whether you read.

The community reading station at Qiaotou — two thick-trunked old banyans on either side standing in octagonal white-tiled planters, a glass-doored room in the middle with a timber sign above the lintel reading 好時光 in large orange characters and 社區共讀站 beneath, pale green and pink panels along the lower wall, a red postbox and a row of painted tree-shaped boards beside the door, and red paving with white court markings in front
“Good Times” — the Community Reading Station

A reading room that is not only for the children enrolled here. The sign over the door says 好時光good times — and underneath, community reading station. Two old banyans stand guard at the entrance.

The reading pavilion beside the field at Qiaotou — a square concrete shelter with its eaves painted in five rainbow bands of blue, green, yellow, orange and red, a wooden bookcase filled with brightly spined children's books mounted on the white back wall with orange vertical plaques hung either side of it, a bright yellow dado around the inside, pale green and pink floor tiles, and the red track and large trees beyond
The Rainbow Pavilion

An open shelter at the edge of the track, painted in five bands of rainbow, with a bookcase bolted to the back wall. No door, no borrowing card, no librarian — you sit down in the shade and read until the bell.

The reading mural at Qiaotou — a large painting set between two columns showing a giant open pop-up book standing in a dark blue and green wood, its pages turning into a path, a child in a crown and red cape running along it with a satchel on their back while other children chase through the trees, a green rabbit with a blue bow at the right, a large blue bird at the left, and a gray rhinoceros in a party hat looking over the top
The Story Coming Out of the Book

A mural of a book standing open in a wood, its pages turned into a path, with a child in a crown and a red cape running down it and a rhinoceros in a party hat watching from the trees. It makes an argument for reading without using the word.

Six Clubs

Skate, balance, swing, dance, spin, sculpt.

Six clubs run at Qiaotou, and between them they cover an unusual range: two that are about balance, one about timing, one about rhythm, one about hand-eye coordination, and one about sitting still. Every one of them has its own English words, its own set of instructions a teacher gives out loud, and its own sentences a child needs in order to join in — and all of that is written out for you on the Lessons page.
