The diabolo club at Qiaotou practising under the covered court — more than a dozen children in blue-and-white PE kit spread across the court, each working a diabolo on a string between two sticks, a yellow diabolo caught in mid-air at the upper right with a boy below looking up ready to catch it, and a low wall, a hedge and a run of greenhouse roofs behind with blue sky showing between the trees

The club works through basic moves, throwing and catching, and practice as a group, and what that builds in the children is concentration, coordination and patience. Every repetition is a small challenge to themselves; along the way they find out how much fun a traditional folk art can be, and every trick they finally land adds to their confidence.

The diabolo is one of the oldest toys anyone in Taiwan still plays with, and it works on a single idea: a spinning thing stays upright. Everything else — the throws, the wraps, the tricks with names — is built on keeping that spin going. This is also the club where a child gets to explain a piece of their own culture to a visitor, which is a good reason to have the English for it.
