PeoPo Visits
Our First-Graders

· By Citizen Reporter Chou Hou-hsien ·

A citizen journalist arrived at the school gate at seven in the morning to cover Huatan Elementary's annual welcome for incoming first-graders. He left calling what he had seen "real education."

What PeoPo Saw

The reporter showed up early. The school's First Registration Day was just beginning — an annual ritual where incoming first-graders, most of them six years old, walk through the campus for the first time with their parents. The day usually carries some quiet magic for families.

What the reporter expected to find: the standard handover scene — a registration desk, name tags, an opening speech. What he found instead: the principal herself, at 7:00 a.m., carrying chairs and setting up the welcome stations alongside the teachers.

I arrived at seven, and saw Principal Chan herself moving things around. I think this is the truest education there is.

What the Day Was Really About 這一天真正想傳遞的

Huatan plans every year's First Registration Day around a different theme. This year's theme came down to a single sentence: show families what their children's six years here will actually look like.

So instead of a static handover, the school turned the morning into a sample of student life. The taiko drum club performed. The orchestra played. The basketball and soccer teams ran demonstrations. Hot-dance, Hokkien-language and Hakka-language classes ran short introduction sessions in real classrooms. By the time families left, they had not just registered — they had seen what kind of place they were entrusting their child to.

Why It Mattered

It would be easy to read the PeoPo reporter's words as flattery. They were not. They were a citizen journalist's quiet observation: that an institution shows its real values not in its press release, but in who is carrying the chairs at 7 a.m.

For Huatan, the report became a small mirror. It reminded the school that the parts of a workday too small to plan for — the early arrival, the chair, the smile to a six-year-old — are exactly what visitors notice first. We are grateful PeoPo took the time to look.
