By the time Principal Chan Hsueh-mei walked through Huatan Elementary's gates in August 2024, she had already spent more than three decades in Changhua County's schools — ten years as a homeroom teacher, nearly a decade as Director of Guidance at Mingzheng Elementary, a year on secondment to the County Government as a curriculum supervisor, and twelve consecutive years as a principal: first at Jiushe Elementary (2012–2018), then at Wenkai Elementary (2018–2024).
She arrived at a meaningful moment. Huatan was just months away from completing its NT$150 million renovation, marking 111 years of continuous education in the township. A school carrying that much history needed a principal who already understood Changhua's elementary-school landscape from the inside — its rural-and-suburban rhythms, its families, and its quiet expectation that the principal is also a daily presence among the children.
詹雪梅校長於 2024 年 8 月走進花壇國小校門時，已經在彰化縣的小學服務超過 30 年——10 年級任老師、近 9 年明正國小輔導主任、1 年借調彰化縣政府擔任課程督學，以及連續 12 年的校長資歷：先後擔任九社國小（2012–2018）與文開國小（2018–2024）校長。
她接任的時機相當有意義。花壇國小當時距離 1.5 億元校舍翻新落成只剩幾個月，正邁入 111 年校史的新章。一所有這樣歷史厚度的學校，需要一位早已熟悉彰化縣國小生態的校長——熟悉城鄉節奏、家長文化、以及「校長要天天在孩子身邊」這件事。

In April 2026, citizen journalist Chou Hou-hsien arrived at the school gate at 7 a.m. to cover Huatan Elementary's annual New Student Registration Day. The reporter expected the standard scene — a registration desk, name tags, an opening speech. What he later wrote about, in his published report, was the principal herself, carrying chairs and setting up the welcome stations alongside the teachers.
I arrived at seven, and saw Principal Chan herself moving things around. I think this is the truest education there is.

From orchestra and taiko to basketball, soccer, hot-dance, and the school's own Star Cup talent show, Huatan offers more than 20 student clubs. The principal speaks about this often: a public school's job is not only to teach — it is to find the one thing each child can shine at.

The transition from kindergarten into elementary school is, for a six-year-old, the biggest jump of their young life. Principal Chan has emphasized that Huatan's first-grade teachers are chosen for patience as much as for pedagogy — and that the first weeks of school matter more than any single curriculum unit.
從幼兒園進入小學，對一個六歲的孩子來說，是他人生第一次最大的跨越。詹校長強調，花壇國小一年級的師資，挑選時看重耐心，與教學專業同等重要——而開學的頭幾週，比任何一個課程單元都更值得用心。
Huatan's identity comes from very specific things — the jasmine fields, the brick kilns, the Mazu pilgrimage that walks past the school each spring. Under Principal Chan, these are not heritage decorations. They are class trips, partnerships, and the reason the school steps out into the rain to welcome a goddess that the village has welcomed for a century.
