A tiny school on the ridge, with a great big idea of what learning can be.
Tongan Elementary sits high on the Bagua tableland of Fenyuan, Changhua — a quiet place of coffee groves, pineapple fields, and beehives. Founded in 1922, our school has watched over the children of Zhonglun and Tongan villages for more than a century.
We are small — fewer than seventy students — and we turn that into our greatest strength. With so few children, every single one is known, seen, and given room to shine. A decade ago this school nearly closed; today it is a nationally recognized "Top 100 Future-Education School," proof that a country school need never settle for less.
Our promise is captured in three words our children live by — "Learning by Doing" and "Just do it!" Here, every child learns to be kind, capable, and curious — ready for Taiwan and ready for the world, in two languages.
One small school, four big ways to grow.
Building blocks, coding, woodworking, and science fairs. Tongan has placed first in the county science fair five years running — and second in the whole nation.
Spoken English, a foreign-teacher classroom, bilingual P.E., and gold-medal CyberFair projects connect our children to the wider world.
Every child at Tongan learns the violin. Add dance, drama, and keyboard, and art becomes part of everyday school life.
Rock climbing, tree climbing, archery, and cycling — plus our own coffee, pineapples, and bees. The whole hillside is our classroom.
Working with local coffee farmers, Tongan students follow the whole journey — planting the trees, roasting and grinding the beans, even building wooden pour-over stands by sawing, drilling, and sanding. Coffee is how our children learn about their land, their community, and the joy of doing things with their own hands.
