On the third day of Pitou’s 2026 Summer Happy Learning program — themed “Strolling the Village, Telling Our Story” (踅田庄・講阮的故事) — students traded their desks for the cultural landmarks of Changhua, in a day built for surprise, challenge, and unforgettable memories.
The first stop was the Taiwanese Language and Culture Creative Park on Bagua Mountain. The visit had barely begun when the royal poinciana trees overhead delivered a surprise no itinerary could plan for: a sudden, spectacular shower of caterpillars. Even the park’s own staff said they’d rarely seen so many. Students tried to stay composed through the opening tour — until the falling visitors grew too numerous to ignore, and the group beat a fast, half-terrified, half-delighted retreat. It was a strange and memorable start to the day.
Inside the park, students explored spaces built around Taiwanese-language culture — music, opera, and traditional performance. From Taiwanese pop songs and vinyl records to hand puppetry (布袋戲) and Taiwanese opera (歌仔戲), the exhibits and hands-on displays revealed something students hadn’t quite expected: Taiwanese isn’t just a language — it’s a living memory of everyday life here.

After lunch came a first for almost everyone: orienteering. Under the guidance of Coach Kuan-ting, students learned to read topographic maps and use a compass, then split into teams to hunt for control points scattered across the area — discussing directions, checking landmarks, and working station by station until every team reached the finish line at “Sky Playground.”

From there, the group descended into the Zhongxing Village Military Dependents’ Culture Park. A passionate, detailed tour from the site’s director walked students through Zhongxing’s full arc — from a community that put down roots and flourished, to its quiet decline, to its recent revival through cultural preservation and youth entrepreneurship. Old houses, narrow lanes, faded photographs, and everyday relics quietly told the stories of different generations. With the help of AI technology, black-and-white photos regained their color — and their subjects seemed to move, bringing a distant past back to life in a way that helped students step into what daily life once looked like there.

The day’s grand finale waited inside Zhongxing Village: the Eagle Red Bean Life Education Story House. Owner Mr. Shen used the picture book The Story of Eagle Red Bean to introduce students to the UN Sustainable Development Goals through the lens of raptor conservation and farming. Then the day’s real star made his entrance — a Harris’s hawk. For many students, it was their first time watching a bird of prey eat up close, their first time seeing one spread its wings and take flight right in front of them, and their first time feeling the rush of air as a hawk swept past at speed. Gasps and cheers rippled through the crowd, closing the day on its most thrilling note.

It was hot, and it was a long day on foot — everyone was visibly tired by the end. But the day’s rewards were just as full.
Summer Happy Learning walks students out of the classroom and into their own hometown.
In every gasp, every discovery, and every hands-on moment, learning could feel this alive — and this moving.
