for Mother's Day

親手做鳳眼糕,送給辛苦的媽媽

Twelve classes spent three weeks at a 100-year-old bakery, shaping rice cakes the way their grandparents did — gifts for moms, made by their own children's hands. 連續三週、12 個班級走進百年老店,用孩子的雙手延續一道家族味道——這是花壇國小今年的母親節。

Why Phoenix-Eye Cakes? 為什麼是鳳眼糕?

Phoenix-eye cakes (fèngyǎn gāo) are one of Taiwan's quieter culinary heirlooms — small, almond-shaped cakes pressed from rice flour, sugar, and a long memory. The shape gets its name from the gentle curve of a phoenix's eye: a wish that whoever eats the cake will smile that same way.

For nearly a hundred years, Cheng Hsing-chen Bakery in Lukang has been one of the few places in Taiwan still making them by hand. When their master baker, Mr. Cheng Fu-wei, agreed to come to Huatan and teach our students himself, the school turned the visit into something larger: three weeks of classes, twelve homerooms, every child making one cake to take home to mom.

鳳眼糕是台灣比較安靜的一道老味道——以米粉、糖、與時間壓成的小杏仁狀糕餅,名字來自鳳凰眼睛溫柔的弧線:吃糕的人,希望也能像鳳眼一樣笑得溫柔。

近百年來,鹿港的鄭興珍餅舖是台灣少數仍堅持手工製作的店家之一。當餅舖的鄭富瑋師傅願意親自到花壇國小授課,學校把這次教學擴大成連續三週、12 個班級的校本課程:每個孩子都要親手做一個鳳眼糕,帶回家送給媽媽。

Like Playing With Clay 像在捏黏土一樣

"It feels like playing with clay," one student told her teacher. Another said, "It's like building sandcastles, but you can eat them." That kind of language — the way kids translate a 100-year-old technique into something from their own world — was the whole point.

The lesson moved quickly between three subjects. In Mandarin class, students wrote about the experience. In Hokkien (Taiwanese) class, they learned to name each ingredient in their grandparents' language. And in the kitchen lab, they pressed the cakes themselves: rice flour, a careful weight of sugar, the small wooden mold.

「就像捏黏土一樣好玩。」一位孩子告訴老師。另一位說:「像堆沙堡,可是這個可以吃。」這種語言——孩子用自己的世界翻譯一個百年老技藝——正是這堂課最珍貴的部分。

整堂課在三個領域之間快速移動:國語文課裡,他們寫下整個體驗;本土語文課裡,他們用阿公阿嬤的語言重新念出每一種食材;在烹飪教室裡,他們親自把米粉、定量的糖、與小木模合在一起,壓出屬於自己的那一個鳳眼糕。

Hopefully, after Mom enjoys it, every day she'll smile — just like phoenix eyes. 希望媽咪享用後,每天都能笑咪咪,就像鳳眼一樣。

Why It Mattered 這堂課的意義

It would have been easier to just hand each child a card to write "Happy Mother's Day." That's not what we did. We asked our students to slow down for three weeks, to learn a recipe older than their grandparents, and to give their moms something that took effort and time.

Mother's Day in Taiwan can quietly become a commercial event. In Huatan, we used it as an excuse to teach our children that culture is not a thing in a museum — it's something you can make in a classroom, on a Wednesday afternoon, with a wooden mold and your own two hands.

當然可以給每個孩子一張卡片寫「母親節快樂」就好。但我們沒有這樣做。我們請孩子們把腳步放慢三週,學會一個比阿嬤還老的食譜,然後把一份要花心力與時間做的禮物,親手交給媽媽。

台灣的母親節很容易變成商業節日。在花壇,我們把它當作一個機會,教孩子:文化不是博物館裡的展品,而是星期三下午在教室裡、用一個木模和自己的雙手就能做出來的東西。
