A small rural school where children read widely, play the harmonica, and grow up proud of their Hakka roots.
Welcome to Chengkung Elementary School, a small rural school on the north bank of the Zhuoshui River in Xizhou Township, Changhua. Together with our Xipan Branch Campus, we are officially listed as a remote school — but our teachers are devoted, and our classrooms are full of music, art, and curiosity.
We build our school on two simple pillars — a love of international language learning, and a deep pride in Hakka culture. We want every child to understand their own roots while looking out at the wider world.
Everything at Chengkung grows from two school-based curriculum threads — one reaching outward to the world's languages, one reaching down into the soil of local Hakka tradition.
Our school song opens with the words "Mount Jade stands tall, the Luo River runs long…" — written in 1968 and set to music by Shih Fu-chen, the beloved Changhua composer known as the “father of Taiwanese children's songs.” The Xipan Branch even has a school song of its own. Most recently, we teamed up with Golden-Melody Hakka singer-songwriter Yen Chih-wen to create an original Hakka song — “𠊎个學校在田中央” (My School in the Middle of the Fields) — celebrating a small school surrounded by rice paddies and Hakka heart.
Our bilingual learning lives online too. Watch our Word of the Day videos, hear daily Classroom English and bilingual announcements, and read our campus News — all in English, with Chinese support.
