Some lessons are easier to learn in a bright room full of your classmates than anywhere else. On Tuesday, October 20, Qiaotou welcomed the social worker Shen Pei-chin for a campus awareness session on the prevention of sexual harassment, sexual assault, the sexual exploitation of children and human trafficking — part of the campus program run by the Changhua County Government Social Affairs Department.
She began with the sentence the whole morning rested on: 我的身體我會說不 — it’s my body, and I can say no. Every person has a line around them, she said, and then she put the usual excuses up on the screen where everyone could look at them: I thought it was fine. It was just a game. I was only joking. None of those decide anything. The one who decides where your line is, is you — and the same is true of the person standing next to you.
Then the screen changed to something every child in the room already spends time in: online. A stranger who is warm and generous in a chat window may be none of the things they say they are, and a photo, once sent, stops being yours. She walked through how these approaches usually start, and what the law actually says about them — with real cases, explained plainly, so that nobody had to guess.
The last part was the most important, and it was also the shortest: if something happens, say it out loud to someone. A class teacher, a parent, anyone at school you trust — or the 113 protection helpline, printed right there on the cloth across the front of the stage. Principal Chen Chun-wen closed the session on the line that was still up on the screen: respect is not just something you say. Boundaries belong to everyone. Saying no to what is wrong is not rudeness — it is courage, and it is allowed.
