Disaster-Prevention Education Takes Root防災教育向下扎根｜新民國小精彩課程紀錄

Disaster-prevention education takes root at Hsinmin. We were honoured to invite the Chelungpu Fault Preservation Park: Dr. Chung Ling-ho led a professional team into school to bring Class 403 two rich and lively disaster-prevention lessons.

Lesson one — decoding the emergency kit. Starting from everyday life, the team introduced the importance of an emergency kit. Through an interactive board game, students discussed in groups and thought hard about 'if it were you, what would you bring?' — learning practical knowledge and building their ability to respond, all in a joyful atmosphere.

Lesson two — the secrets of earthquakes and strata. With clear, easy-to-understand explanations, students learned the causes of earthquakes and the principle of plate compression, and were introduced to Taiwan's common faults — especially the Changhua Fault — so they could understand the geological conditions and potential risks near where they live. Using a sandbox experiment, they observed first-hand how strata deposit and, under compression, form folds and faults, turning abstract science into something concrete.

Both lessons combined knowledge with fun. Students not only gained a great deal but also, almost imperceptibly, built up correct disaster-prevention concepts — from understanding to practice, bringing this education truly into daily life. Thank you to Dr. Chung's team for their dedicated guidance; Hsinmin looks forward to promoting ever more diverse disaster-prevention education.
