Stories from Yuhua

Character honours, wetland walks, and trips well beyond the tide line — what a small village school can do, child by child.

I ❤️ YHES — Character & Reading Honoured at the County Level

On the running track behind the Yuhua schoolyard, every child held a placard up to the sky — I ❤️ YHES — alongside the year's Character Education and Reading Cup trophies. In a school of fewer than fifty children, every student is named in every honour the school receives. Recognition here is not a few names on a board; it is the whole school, lined up in one frame.

Halloween on the Running Track — the Whole School in One Frame

For Halloween, every child and teacher dressed up and came out to the school running track for one whole-school photograph. In Yuhua, festivals aren't a class activity — they are a school activity, by default. Every grade joins, every face is in the frame.

The World on Our Wall

Just outside our classrooms stands a hand-painted world map mural, with English words like "to read" and "true" woven into its colours. From a village of one hundred families on Taiwan's west coast, our children learn early that they belong to a world bigger than the tide line.

Under the Dinosaur — A Field Trip Beyond the Tide Line

When you grow up by the sea, the rest of the world should never feel far. Our students travelled to the National Museum of Natural Science in Taichung, walked under the dinosaur skeletons, and came home with a wider sense of what is possible — and what they might one day want to study.

Reading Our Coast Through Its Temples

Coastal Taiwan's history is written in its temples. Each year, our students walk to neighbouring Mazu temples on the western shore, listen to elders speak about the pilgrimage, and learn that local culture is something you stand inside — not something you only read about.

Performance ·

Every Child Gets the Stage

In a school where every classroom holds a single grade, no one disappears in a crowd. Talent shows, festival performances, and end-of-term concerts include every student by design. Confidence is not a privilege here — it is built, child by child.

We are working with Yuhua to bring more recent stories — the unicycle village tour, Wanggong wetland exploration, the organic garden & Iron Chef contest, and the Bowl-of-Rice school history walk — onto this page as photographs and notes arrive from the school.
