To turn classroom knowledge into something the children could see and touch, Sigang's upper-grade classes travelled to the Changhua west coast today for a wetlands field study.

From fiddler crabs and mudskippers on the tidal flats to salt-tolerant plants and migratory-bird habitats, the guide walked the children through the wetland's living roster — and made plain how this thin strip of coast holds together the wider ecology of the county. Children crouched at the mudline to watch, lifted binoculars to chase distant shorebirds, bent low to name shells the sea had left behind. Every small discovery became the conversation of the moment.

Through the day, the students didn't only deepen their grasp of the natural world — they grew a real care for it. What they brought home wasn't just knowledge. It was the steady knowing that “home is also the classroom.”

"Home is also the classroom — and the coast just outside is its biggest chapter."
