Principal Hsu is a scholar of reading. She earned her Ph.D. in Education from National Taiwan Normal University with a dissertation on building a code of teaching ethics for elementary school teachers, and her earlier master's research followed a sixth-grade reading group through reciprocal teaching. For more than twenty years she has been writing, teaching and leading on the same question: how children learn to read, and how teachers learn to teach.
That work has never stayed inside one school. She was the founding convener of Changhua County's Reading Instruction Advisory Group and still serves as its deputy convener; she has taught as an adjunct assistant professor at three universities; and she has published books, journal articles and newspaper columns that carry classroom questions out to a wider public.
