13th Principal of Luoqing Elementary · since August 2020
Principal Hsu Hsiao-lin took office in August 2020, becoming the 13th principal of Luoqing Elementary. Under his stewardship, the school has stepped into a third year of bilingual education while protecting what makes Luoqing recognizably itself — the dragon dance, the recorder ensemble, the Tang-poetry singing, and the eight named spaces that turn every walk to class into a small lesson.
Principal Hsu's leadership is best read through four words children at Luoqing hear all year: roots, voice, wonder, world. They are the quiet architecture behind every program on this campus.
Q. Why is Luoqing's bilingual program only in its third year?
Because we wanted to start it properly. A bilingual program at a rural elementary school isn't just about hiring a foreign teacher — it's about building a campus that can hold two languages without either becoming background noise. We took the time. Now we are ready to grow.
Q. Why a fairytale campus? Isn't it too playful for an academy-named school?
The opposite. A school named after a Qing-dynasty academy carries a heavy responsibility. Without the colors, the storybook murals, the owl theatre — the children would feel they had walked into a museum. The fairytale campus is what makes the academy livable for a 10-year-old.
Q. What do you hope a Luoqing graduate carries with them?
Two things they cannot lose. The ability to read a Tang poem and feel something. And the willingness to say "good morning" to a stranger in English without being afraid. That's enough — the rest, life will teach.
