The Story Behind the Festival

Qu Yuan and the Miluo River

Long ago in ancient China, there lived a poet and a minister named Qu Yuan. He served the king of the state of Chu and loved his country deeply. When the king turned away from his advice and Chu was about to fall, Qu Yuan was filled with sorrow. On the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, he walked into the Miluo River and never came back.

The villagers loved Qu Yuan. They rowed boats out into the river to search for him, beating drums and splashing water to scare the fish away from his body. They threw zongzi — rice wrapped in bamboo leaves — into the river so the fish would eat the rice instead.

Year after year, on the same day, people remembered him by racing dragon boats and eating zongzi. That is how the Dragon Boat Festival was born — out of love, grief, and the wish to remember someone good.

Six Dragon Boat Traditions

Taiwanese families still keep
🐉

Dragon Boat Racing

Teams paddle in long, narrow boats decorated as dragons. Drums set the pace. The villagers who once searched for Qu Yuan still race every year.

🍙

Eating Zongzi

Sticky rice with pork, mushroom, salted egg yolk, peanuts — wrapped in bamboo leaves, steamed for hours. Every family has its own recipe.

🥚

Standing Eggs at Noon

At exactly noon on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, children try to stand an egg upright. Tradition says it brings good luck for the year.

🌱

Hanging Mugwort

Families hang bunches of mugwort and calamus above the door — said to drive away mosquitoes, illness, and bad spirits during summer's hottest days.

👜

Wearing Scented Sachets

Small embroidered bags filled with fragrant herbs. Children wear them around their necks — pretty, fragrant, and a tiny piece of protection.

🍷

Realgar Wine

A traditional yellow wine drunk (or dabbed on the forehead) on Dragon Boat Day to ward off insects and evil — from the tale of the White Snake.
