Beauty We Never Knew

Stepping outside the classroom, Huatan students spent a day learning with all five senses — a full day of outdoor education built around Indigenous culture, at the Llyung Startup Cluster in Wufeng, Taichung.

The day began with Teacher Tjuku Lîm, who introduced Taiwan’s seventeen Indigenous peoples, laying a foundation for everything that followed.

The mountains hold more wisdom than any textbook.

Teacher Giu Tjuveljevelj then led an ecology tour along the trail, teaching basic mountain first-aid know-how through wild plants like giant taro and mountain yam, and introducing Indigenous totem art alongside the Paiwan people’s “three treasures” — the bronze knife, the glass bead, and the clay pot.

At the Camak Music & Creative Space, students sampled honey lemonade from Mt. Dawu and sweet millet doughnuts, then took the process into their own hands — harvesting and pounding millet themselves — before tasting Avai, a traditional dish wrapped first in shell-ginger leaves, then in false-taro leaves.

A special thanks to Teacher Camak Lin, who wove music and the languages of many tribes together, sharing stories from his travels introducing Taiwan’s culture to the world — sending every student home having seen, and heard, the many faces of Taiwan’s beauty.
