Houliao students proved that public-health education can be playful. They wrote and illustrated their very own picture book about disease prevention — including the lesser-known infection melioidosis — and on May 15 held a formal launch and book-signing at the Fangyuan Township Library.
Who says health education has to be dull? Houliao kids made it a story.
The programme opened with a young storyteller drawing everyone into the world of "The Bottomless Pit," followed by classmates Cheng-le and Yi-xuan performing a comic disease-prevention crosstalk that had the visiting dignitaries laughing out loud. Even a topic like melioidosis, it turns out, can become a story children love — that is the reading energy of a Houliao child.
Warm thanks to CEO Liu Ding-ping of the Urbani Memorial Foundation, Supervisor Shih Pei-jun of the Changhua County Education Department, and Fangyuan Township Mayor Lin Bao-ling. The book is now being shared with other schools across the township — a milestone in Houliao's drive for reading and cross-disciplinary creativity, so the hope of protecting one another's health keeps spreading.
