A small school by the rice fields, raising big-hearted children 稻浪邊的小校，培育大格局的孩子
Houliao Elementary School began in 1950 as a single first-grade class meeting in the village assembly hall. After the typhoon of 1956 collapsed that hall, lessons moved into local family homes — a memory long held by the elders of Houliao village. The school became independent in 1961 and has since served the children of this small farming community in Fangyuan Township, on the southwestern coast of Changhua County.
Today, the children of Houliao learn in a campus surrounded by rice, peanut, and asparagus fields. We are small enough that every teacher knows every child — and every child has a chance to lead, perform, and compete.
後寮國民小學創立於民國 39 年（1950 年），最初為「芳苑國校後寮分班」一年級一班，於村內集會所上課。民國 45 年九三颱風造成集會所倒塌，學生改在民宅中上課，是後寮老人家共同的記憶。民國 50 年正式獨立建校，自此守護著芳苑鄉後寮村的孩子們。
今日的後寮，是稻田、花生田與蘆筍田之間的偏鄉小校。每位老師都認得每一個孩子，每位孩子也都有屬於自己的舞台。
Houliao village sits between Fangyuan Township and Erlin, surrounded by rice, peanut, and asparagus fields, with an egg-laying hen cooperative just down the road. Our students grow up understanding what real work looks like — the rhythm of planting and harvest, and how a family's livelihood comes from the land.
後寮村座落於芳苑鄉與二林鎮交界，校園周邊是花生、蘆筍、稻米與冬瓜的田野，社區內還有蛋雞產銷班。我們的孩子從小看著大人耕種、收成，懂得一個家的生活如何從土地長出來——這是課本之外，最真實的學習。
In the Japanese era, Houliao was designated a "model village" — planned streets, careful drainage, an unusual concentration of literary scholars. The poet Hung Su-lun was born here. Walk through the village today and the old courtyard houses (sanheyuan) and Longfeng Temple still stand, woven into our students' daily route to school.
日治時期，後寮被指定為「模範部落」——街道規劃井然、排水完善、文人輩出，詩社創辦人洪似倫即是後寮人。今日漫步村中，傳統三合院與龍鳳宮依舊守護著這片土地，也是孩子每天上下學行經的風景。
When the whole school is small, no one sits on the bench. Our students compete countywide in croquet, in five-a-side soccer, in inline-skate speed racing — and we still send them out to storytelling contests, lantern-painting competitions, and the township carnival. Being small means being seen.
當全校就是這麼一所小校，沒有孩子會被冷落。我們的學生參加全縣的槌球錦標賽、五人制足球賽、競速直排輪錦標賽——也走進小小說書人選拔、創意花燈彩繪比賽、芳苑鄉運動嘉年華。小校的意義，是每個孩子都被看見。
In the 2025 Changhua County Education Cup, our croquet team took silver in the three-player division. For a small village school, it's not just a medal — it's a line-up that fills nearly the whole school photo behind one red banner.
114 學年度教育盃槌球錦標賽，後寮國小三人制組榮獲第二名。對一所偏鄉小校來說，這不是一面獎牌而已——是幾乎填滿整張校園合照的孩子們，一起站在那條紅布條後面的成果。
Every spring the whole township — ten plus schools strong — meets for the Fangyuan Sports Carnival. Our kids come home with certificates, ribbons, and the quiet pride of having represented Houliao on a bigger stage.
每年春天，芳苑鄉十多所學校一同參與「運動嘉年華」。後寮的孩子帶著獎狀與勳章回來，靜靜地站在校門口拍照——他們知道自己代表的是後寮這個小村莊。
Our students train on the school's own running track, then race countywide on inline skates. Soccer, croquet, skating — three sports that ask the same thing of every child: show up, train hard, push for the next step.
孩子們在校內的跑道練習，再代表後寮參加彰化縣教育盃競速直排輪錦標賽。足球、槌球、直排輪——這三項運動對每個孩子的要求都一樣：到場、認真練、再往前一步。
Beyond the field, our students compete in the Changhua County Junior Storyteller contest, the Erlin Township creative-lantern painting competition, and chase the school's "Reading Passport" milestones — 25, 50, 75 books and beyond.
運動之外，後寮的孩子也走上「彰化縣小小說書人選拔」、「二林鎮創意花燈彩繪」的舞台，並在校內挑戰「閱讀護照」25 本、50 本、75 本的里程碑。
