Climbing to the Treetops

Getting ready · Climbing up · Reaching the canopy
Are there little monkeys in the school trees? No — it is our very cool tree-climbing class! Today the fourth and fifth graders put on proper helmets, tree-climbing harnesses and gloves, and challenged themselves in the dappled green shade. Every step upward was full of courage and concentration.
The children learned a special way to go up, called "sit, pull, step, stand." They gripped a friction knot on the rope, put their feet into a foot loop, and used the strength of their legs together with their hands to rise slowly toward the canopy. Down on the ground, a trained instructor watched every climber closely, holding the end of the rope to keep each child safe.
When the children beat their fear of heights and reached the leafy branches, they saw something no textbook can give — the school seen from a tree's point of view. Touching the bark with their own hands and watching the tiny lives around them up close, they built a deeper bond with the land beneath them.
This was more than exercise. It was a real lesson in environmental and life education. By using tree protectors and other proper gear, we learned how to get close to nature while doing as little harm to the tree as possible. Well done to every brave young tree climber who made it to the top!
