Today our library became a classroom for the hills. A nature teacher from the Kuan-Shu Educational Foundation (觀樹教育基金會) visited Guangxing and led a lesson on protecting Taiwan's low hills for our third and fourth graders: Meet the Pangolin.
The pangolin is the only mammal in the world covered in hard scales. It has no teeth, and it is very shy. At night it comes out to dig for food — mostly ants and termites — and when it feels scared, it rolls up into a tight ball.
Students sat on the floor and listened closely. Then it was game time! In a memory card game, they turned over cards to find the animals of the hills. On a big blue mat, they used long sticks to pick up paper bugs — a little like a pangolin catching ants with its long, sticky tongue.
The teacher also showed what to do if you ever meet a pangolin. If it looks healthy, don't touch it and don't take it home. If it is hurt, ask an adult to call for help. Pangolins are wild animals, and their best home is the forest on the hills.
Pangolins are one of Taiwan's natural treasures. Protecting them starts with children who know them — and care about them.
今天，學校特別邀請到觀樹教育基金會（裡山塾）的專業講師，在圖書館裡與三四年級的孩子們展開一場生動又實用的淺山保育之旅——「遇見穿山甲」！
穿山甲是世界上唯一身披角質鱗片的哺乳動物，也是淺山生態系中極為特殊的「夜行性食蟻專家」。牠們口中沒有牙齒、個性害羞，卻擁有高超的挖洞技能與強大的防禦機制：主食是螞蟻和白蟻，害怕時還會把身體捲成一顆球。
大家席地而坐、專注聆聽，接著是遊戲時間！孩子們翻記憶卡認識淺山裡的動物，又拿著長長的小棒子，在藍色地墊上「捕捉」紙做的小蟲——就像穿山甲用又長又黏的舌頭吃螞蟻一樣。
講師也教大家：如果遇見穿山甲該怎麼辦？健康的穿山甲不要摸、不要帶回家；受傷了就請大人通報求救。穿山甲是野生動物，淺山的森林才是牠們最好的家。
孩子們不僅認識了台灣國寶級野生動物——穿山甲，更學到了如何在日常生活中成為牠們的守護者！
