A health talk, a red ribbon, and a lot of raised hands

This week our classroom turned into a small health class. A teacher came to talk with us about a virus called HIV — and about something just as important: how we treat people who are ill.

HIV is a virus that makes it harder for the body to fight off sickness. Long ago, people were very afraid of it. Today, doctors have good medicine, and someone living with HIV can go to school, go to work, and live a long, healthy life just like anyone else.

Here is the part every student should remember: you cannot catch HIV from everyday life. Sitting at the same desk, playing ball together, sharing lunch, giving a hug, holding hands — all of these are completely safe.

So when someone is unwell, there is no reason to move away from them. Very often what hurts a person the most is not the illness itself, but being left out and looked at differently. That kind of hurt is something we can all choose to stop.

The red ribbon you saw on the screen is a symbol used all around the world. It means: I care, and I will not treat you differently. Let's be the classmates who include people, ask how they are, and make everyone feel welcome at Guangxing.
