Fangyuan's tidal flat is the largest muddy tidal flat in Taiwan — and for generations, it has been oyster country. Long before trucks and tractors, local farmers rode ox-drawn carts out onto the flats to harvest oysters, a tradition known as "sea-ox culture." A handful of sea oxen still work the flats today, and Fangyuan Elementary keeps their story alive in the classroom.
From the tide to the classroom.
Children from Fangyuan's fishing families grow up around oysters — many can shuck a shell before they can write their name. At school, they learn to give old, discarded oyster shells a second life: some are reused to raise new oysters, and others are transformed into hanging wind-chime installations and campus art, like the shells strung through the trees along our running track.
Visitors to Fangyuan often get the same experience our students do — riding one of the township's last remaining sea oxen out onto the flats to see the oyster farms stretch to the horizon. It's an unforgettable way to understand why this small coastal school is so proud of where it stands.
