Saturday morning at the Beidou Township Library began with a drumbeat. Dashin Elementary School is turning sixty-two, and it is celebrating with art.
週六早上，北斗鎮立圖書館在鼓聲中揭開序幕。大新國小六十二歲了，用藝術來慶生。
The exhibition is called The Story Is Unfolding. Displayed like frames on a roll of film, the works include handmade picture books, paintings, and Zentangle drawings blended with pastels, made by students and teachers alike.
展覽名為「故事的發生」。作品像一格格底片掛在牆上，有手作繪本、畫作，還有融入粉彩的纏繞畫，師生一起創作。
Fifth and sixth graders opened the ceremony on cajón and ocarina for a full house of parents, neighbors, and local leaders, including Beidou Mayor Yen Hung-lin.
五、六年級學生以木箱鼓和陶笛為典禮開場，台下坐滿家長、鄉親與地方首長，北斗鎮長顏宏霖也到場。
For Principal Huang Hsin-chun, bringing the artwork out of the school and into the town library is the whole idea.
對黃信君校長來說，把作品帶出校園、帶進鎮上的圖書館，正是這場展覽的用意。
Principal Huang Hsin-chun: “We are stepping out of the school and into the big family of Beidou. We hope the whole town will see our school’s art.”
黃信君校長：「走出學校，我們走進北斗鎮的大家庭裡面。我們希望讓我們北斗鎮都看到我們學校美術。」
English teacher Amelia, now in year three at Dashin, heard the stories behind the pictures in class.
英語外師 Amelia 在大新第三年，孩子們在課堂上跟她說過每幅畫背後的故事。
Amelia: “The students have all worked very hard to make their artworks the very best that they can, and they have really enjoyed making them. They’ve told me all about them in English class.”
Amelia：「學生們都非常努力，把作品做到最好，也很享受創作的過程。他們在英文課上跟我介紹了自己的作品。」
Resident artist Tsai Yuan-huan guided families through the gallery, and shared something children often say.
駐校藝術家蔡元桓帶著家長孩子逐幅導覽，也分享了孩子們常說的一句話。
Tsai Yuan-huan: “Some children say they took their work home to show Mom and Dad. The parents said, ‘Oh, that’s great,’ but never even looked.”
蔡元桓：「也有孩子說，回去拿給爸爸媽媽看，他們就說：『哦，好棒哦。』但是連看都沒有看。」
That is why this opening was set for a Saturday: so families could come, and really look. Upstairs, they stayed for a tea ceremony.
所以開幕特別選在星期六，讓家人能一起來，好好地看。樓上還有茶席等著大家。
The show grew out of what Dashin calls its Seed Cultivation Program. Sixty-two years on, the seeds are growing. The Story Is Unfolding runs through October 29 at the Beidou Township Library.
