A small school with a big campus — and room for every child to run, to read, and to grow.
Da Jah is a long-established village school in Hemei Township, out among the rice fields — small, rural, and part of the life of this community for generations. We are the smallest school in Hemei. But as the old saying goes, a sparrow may be small and still have every organ intact: our campus holds a wide sports field, a pavilion and a lily pond, a garden, playgrounds, and reading corners tucked into every quiet spot.
Just inside the gate stands a white boulder carved with three red characters: 大嘉好. Read aloud it sounds exactly like da jia hao — “hello, everyone.” It is our name and our greeting at the same time, and it is the first thing every visitor meets.
Rice fields on one side, a running track on the other — this is where our children learn.
Seen from above, Da Jah is a green square set into farmland: a full oval track, ball courts, old trees, and solar panels along every roof. The gate carries our name twice — DA JAH PRIMARY SCHOOL in gold, and 大嘉國民小學 up the tower beside it.
Four words, and a whole education:
Da Jah keeps to whole-person education. The whole school pulls in one direction: we care about children’s health, and we work to light up their appetite for learning. Two things sit at the centre of everything — reading and character — and our teachers pay close attention to how a child lives day to day, not only to how a child scores. The aim is simple, and it is spelled out in six characters: children who love to read and are well-mannered.
熊愛閱讀 — the bear loves reading. Say it aloud and it also means: we really love reading.
A Formosan black bear reads on the wall; a wooden tree grows out of the floor and holds the picture books in its branches. The furniture is low, the books are within reach, and no one has to ask permission to sit down and start.
The classroom is not the only place a lesson happens here.
Alongside these, the campus has an outdoor performance deck, a well-equipped audio-visual room, and the student activity centre whose white curve and red canopy you see at the top of this page. Learning resources are generous for a school this size — and that is deliberate. Everywhere is a place to learn; every moment is a moment of learning.
Running, ball games, exercise, play — there is space here, and plenty of it.
Da Jah has a proper oval track with lanes and a start line, courts for ball games, and a playground with slides and climbing frames. For a school of our size that is a luxury — and it means every child gets a turn, every time.
Come in through the gate and take a look around.
