On the morning of June 24th, Cundong's 5th graders logged onto a video call and met their pen-pal partners face to face. The occasion was the "Taiwan–Thailand Cultural Exchange 2026," a live session with their sister class at Matheyum Watmai Krongtong School in Thailand, hosted over Google Meet with the help of Foreign English Teacher Maelyn Villano.
The session followed a full program: welcome and greetings, a "Top 5 Local Foods" presentation from each side, cultural song and dance performances, a live question-and-answer round, and closing messages. On the Thai side, students dialed in individually from their school's STEAM Education computer lab; on the Cundong side, the whole class gathered around one big screen in their classroom.
The food segment was a highlight. Thai students introduced Pad Thai — stir-fried rice noodles with shrimp, egg, tofu and peanuts — and Tom Yum, a hot and sour soup, describing the flavors and ingredients in English while Cundong's students watched and took it all in. It was a small, tasty window into everyday life on the other side of the South China Sea.
Connecting hearts across borders, through friendship and culture.
When it was Cundong's turn, the class performed an action song together in front of the big screen, sending a burst of Taiwanese energy across the call. Questions flew back and forth between the two classes afterward, and by the closing minutes, several Cundong students were holding up hand-made signs reading "Thank You," paired with the flags of Taiwan and Thailand — a simple, heartfelt way to say goodbye.
This live session builds on the pen-pal writing and video exchanges Cundong's 5th graders have kept up with their Thai partner class all year — a partnership that turns English class into a real conversation with a real friend, no airfare required.
