The West Coast:
Wanggong and
the Tidal Flats

This is the trip most foreign teachers in Changhua never take, and the one they regret missing when they leave. It is also the only one in this pack where getting the day wrong means arriving to find there is literally nothing to see — because out here, the tide decides everything.

這是彰化多數外師從來沒去過、離開時卻最後悔沒去的一趟。它也是本包裡唯一一趟「日子挑錯就真的什麼都看不到」的行程—— 因為在這裡，一切由潮汐決定。

Section 01The other Changhua

Changhua has two faces. The eastern edge is Bagua Plateau — hills, temples, the Great Buddha. The west is something else entirely: one of the largest intertidal zones 潮間帶 in Taiwan, where the sea pulls back twice a day and exposes kilometers of mudflat.

彰化有兩張臉。東緣是八卦台地——丘陵、廟宇、大佛。西邊則完全是另一回事： 全台最大的潮間帶之一，海水一天退兩次，露出綿延數公里的泥灘。

That mud is not empty. It is a working farm. The oysters 蚵 in the oyster omelette you ate in Lukang were almost certainly grown here, on racks that stand in the water at high tide and in the open air at low tide. Fangyuan Township 芳苑鄉 and the port at Wanggong 王功 are where that industry lives.

那片泥灘不是空的，它是一座正在運作的農場。你在鹿港吃的蚵仔煎裡的蚵， 幾乎可以確定是在這裡養的——蚵架漲潮時泡在水裡，退潮時露在空氣中。 芳苑鄉與王功漁港就是這個產業的所在。

Some of your students are the children and grandchildren of oyster farmers. That is worth knowing before you go, and it changes what you notice when you get there.

你的學生裡有一些是蚵農的孩子和孫子。去之前知道這件事，你到了現場會看見不一樣的東西。

Section 02The tide decides everything

Plan this trip backwards from the tide table, not from your calendar. At high tide the flats are under water: no carts run, no crabs, no clam digging, nothing exposed. At low tide the same place becomes a landscape you can walk out into.

這趟行程要從潮汐表倒著規劃，而不是從你的行事曆。漲潮時泥灘在水面下：鐵牛車不開、看不到螃蟹、不能挖蛤，什麼都沒露出來。 退潮時，同一個地方變成一片你可以走進去的地景。

If you can get the tide low in the late afternoon, you get the full sequence in one go: the flats, then the lighthouse, then the sun going down over the strait. That is the version of this trip people talk about afterward.

如果你能排到傍晚低潮，就能一次走完整串：泥灘、燈塔，然後太陽落進海峽。 大家事後會拿出來講的，就是這個版本的行程。

Section 03Getting there — the honest version

This is the hardest of the three trips to reach without a car, and pretending otherwise would waste your Saturday. Wanggong is out on the coast in Fangyuan, well away from the railway.

這是三趟裡最難用大眾運輸抵達的一趟，假裝不是這樣只會浪費你的星期六。 王功在芳苑的海邊，離鐵路很遠。

• By bus: Changhua Bus 彰化客運 runs coastal services toward Fangyuan and Wanggong, generally via Lukang or Erlin 二林. Services are much thinner than on the Lukang route, so check the timetable and the last return departure before you go — being stranded out here after dark is a real possibility, not a joke. 搭客運：彰化客運有往芳苑、王功的海線班車，多半經鹿港或二林。班次比鹿港線少很多，出發前務必查班表以及回程末班車——天黑後困在這裡是真的會發生，不是玩笑。
• Sharing a ride: this is the trip where going with colleagues who drive, or splitting a taxi from Lukang, is genuinely the sensible choice rather than the lazy one. 共乘：這一趟找有車的同事一起去，或從鹿港合叫計程車，是真的合理的選擇，不是偷懶。
• By scooter: the flat coastal roads are easy riding, but the wind off the strait is strong and the sun on the coast is unforgiving. Bring more water than you think. 騎車：海邊道路平坦好騎，但海峽吹來的風很強，沿海的太陽也毫不留情。帶的水要比你以為的多。

Section 04What to actually do

1. Ride a cart out onto the flats 鐵牛車

The local three-wheeled carts, driven by oyster farmers themselves, take visitors out across the mud at low tide — a short ride, then time on the flats to dig for clams 摸蛤 and look at what lives there. This is the single thing that makes the trip worth the journey, and it is also the thing that does not exist at high tide.

當地的三輪鐵牛車由蚵農自己駕駛，退潮時載遊客開進泥灘——車程不長，接著就是在灘上摸蛤、看看那裡住著什麼。 這是讓整趟路值得的那一件事，也正是漲潮時根本不存在的那一件事。

2. Fangyuan Lighthouse 芳苑燈塔

Black and white vertical stripes, octagonal, and the tallest lighthouse in Taiwan — it is also the youngest, built in 1978. You will hear it called Wanggong Lighthouse 王功燈塔 locally. It photographs extremely well against a flat horizon, which is most of why people come.

黑白直條紋、八角形，全台最高的燈塔，同時也是最年輕的一座，建於 1978 年。 當地也常叫它王功燈塔。在平坦的地平線上拍起來極好看，這也是多數人來的原因。

3. Stay for the sunset

Changhua faces west across the Taiwan Strait, so this coast gets the sun going down over open water. The fishing lights of Wanggong 王功漁火 are a long-standing entry on the list of Changhua's classic scenic views — which is a polite way of saying local people have considered this worth looking at for a very long time.

彰化面西，隔著台灣海峽，所以這片海岸看得到太陽落進開闊的水面。 王功漁火長期名列彰化的經典景致——換句話說，在地人認為這值得一看，已經很久了。

Section 05What to eat

Everything here is oysters, and the oysters are the reason to eat here rather than anywhere else in the county.

這裡的一切都是蚵，而蚵正是你該在這裡吃、而不是在縣內其他地方吃的理由。

• Oyster fritter 蚵嗲 / 蚵仔炸 — battered and deep-fried, the Wanggong specialty. Eat it standing up, immediately, while it is too hot. 蚵嗲／蚵仔炸——裹粉油炸，王功的招牌。站著吃、馬上吃，趁它還燙得要命的時候。
• Grilled oysters 烤蚵 — often sold by the tray at the port, sometimes all-you-can-eat. Shells open, sea salt, nothing else needed. 烤蚵——漁港常見整盤賣，有時是吃到飽。殼一開，海鹽味道就夠了，不需要別的。
• Oyster omelette 蚵仔煎 — you had it in Lukang; have it again here, twenty minutes from where the oyster grew, and notice the difference. 蚵仔煎——你在鹿港吃過，在這裡再吃一次，離蚵長大的地方只有二十分鐘，感覺一下差別。

Section 07Taking it back to the classroom

1. The flats are a free science lesson. Mudskippers 彈塗魚, fiddler crabs 招潮蟹, clams, oysters — habitat, tides, food chains. Photograph what you see and let the students name it in English. 泥灘就是一堂免費的自然課。彈塗魚、招潮蟹、蛤蜊、牡蠣——棲地、潮汐、食物鏈。把看到的拍下來，讓學生用英語說出名稱。
2. Ask whose family works the water. In coastal schools some hands will go up. A child explaining their grandfather's job in English is a better lesson than anything you planned. 問問誰家裡是靠海維生的。在海線的學校會有人舉手。一個孩子用英語解釋阿公的工作，比你準備的任何東西都好。
3. Tides are a genuine bilingual topic. High tide, low tide, twice a day, the moon. The vocabulary is small, the concept is real, and it is happening thirty minutes from the classroom. 潮汐是很好的雙語主題。漲潮、退潮、一天兩次、月亮。字彙量不大，概念是真的，而且就發生在離教室三十分鐘的地方。
