Lukang
in One Day

You almost certainly live within an hour of Lukang, and there is a reasonable chance you have not been. This is not a list of sights. It is a plan for one Saturday, written for someone who has to get there by public transport, wants to know what is actually worth stopping for, and would like to be able to order lunch.

你住的地方離鹿港幾乎一定不到一小時，而你很可能還沒去過。這不是一份景點清單， 而是一個星期六的計畫，寫給要搭大眾運輸過去、想知道哪些真的值得停下來、而且希望自己點得了午餐的人。

Section 01What Lukang actually is

For roughly a century, Lukang was the second most important city on this island. There is an old ranking that Taiwanese people still quote — 一府二鹿三艋舺, "first Tainan, second Lukang, third Bangka" — placing Lukang above what is now Taipei. It was a port, facing China across the strait, and the wealth of that trade is why a town this small has temples this good.

有大約一百年的時間，鹿港是全島第二重要的城市。台灣人到現在還在引用一句老排名—— 一府二鹿三艋舺——鹿港排在今天的台北之前。它是一個港口，隔著海峽面向中國， 而那段貿易累積的財富，正是這麼小的一個鎮為什麼會有這麼好的廟。

Then the harbor silted up. The trade left, the railway went elsewhere, and Lukang stopped growing — which is precisely why it is still standing. The reason the streets bend and narrow the way they do is that nobody had the money or the reason to straighten them.

後來港口淤積了。貿易走了，鐵路也沒有經過，鹿港就停止成長——而這正是它至今還在的原因。 街道之所以那樣彎、那樣窄，是因為沒有人有錢、也沒有理由把它們拉直。

Section 02Getting there, and which day to pick

Lukang has no train station. That single fact shapes the whole trip: you take a train to Changhua City and change to a bus.

鹿港沒有火車站。光是這件事就決定了整趟行程的形狀：先搭火車到彰化市，再轉客運。

1. Take the TRA to Changhua Station 台鐵彰化站. From anywhere on the Changhua plain this is short and frequent. 搭台鐵到彰化站。從彰化平原上任何地方過去都很快、班次也多。
2. Walk out of the station and turn left. The bus station is right there — you do not need a taxi and you do not need to cross anything major. 出站後往左走，客運站就在旁邊——不需要叫計程車，也不必穿越什麼大馬路。
3. Take a Lukang-bound bus operated by Changhua Bus 彰化客運. Routes toward Lukang include the 6900 and 6936. The ride is roughly half an hour. 搭往鹿港的彰化客運，6900、6936 等路線都到，車程大約半小時。
4. Coming by high speed rail? The HSR station called 高鐵彰化站 is not in Changhua City — it is in Tianzhong, in the south of the county, and there are separate buses from there. Tell visiting friends this before they book. 搭高鐵來？高鐵彰化站不在彰化市，在南邊的田中，那裡另有客運。朋友要來之前先告訴他們。

Which day

• Avoid Monday. A lot of Old Street is shut, and some of what is open opens late. This catches out more first-time visitors than anything else. 避開星期一。老街有不少店沒開，開的也可能晚開。這是最多人第一次去踩到的雷。
• Weekdays are quiet, weekends are alive. If you want photographs, go on a weekday. If you want the town at full volume — vendors calling, families everywhere — go on a weekend and accept the crowd. 平日安靜，假日熱鬧。想拍照就平日去；想看整個鎮火力全開——攤販吆喝、到處都是家庭——就假日去，並接受人潮。
• Arrive by mid-morning. Most shops open around nine or ten and start closing from six or seven. An afternoon-only trip loses half of it. 上午中段就到。多數店家九點、十點左右開，六點、七點起陸續收。只排下午等於少掉一半。

Section 03Four things worth your time

1. Lukang Longshan Temple 鹿港龍山寺

If you only do one thing, do this one. It is widely considered one of the finest pieces of traditional temple architecture in Taiwan, and the thing to look up at is the octagonal caisson ceiling 八卦藻井 — a spiralling wooden dome assembled from interlocking brackets, the largest of its kind here. It is quieter and more solemn than the Mazu temple; if you have been told all Taiwanese temples are loud and smoky, this is the one that corrects you.

只做一件事的話，就做這一件。它被廣泛認為是台灣傳統廟宇建築的極品，而該抬頭看的是 八卦藻井——由層層斗栱交錯疊起的螺旋木造穹頂，全台同類中最大的一座。 它比天后宮安靜、肅穆得多；如果有人告訴你台灣的廟都吵、都煙霧瀰漫，這一座會糾正你。

2. Lukang Tianhou Temple 鹿港天后宮

The Mazu temple, and the busiest place in town. Mazu 媽祖 is the sea goddess — which tells you everything about what this town used to do for a living. Come here for the opposite experience to Longshan: incense, noise, people actually praying rather than sightseeing.

媽祖廟，鎮上最熱鬧的地方。媽祖是海神——這件事已經說明了這個鎮從前靠什麼維生。 來這裡是為了跟龍山寺相反的體驗：香火、人聲，以及真的在拜拜而不是在觀光的人。

3. The Old Street 鹿港老街

Really Putou Street and Yaolin Street 埔頭街、瑤林街. Two things to look for rather than just walking through: the Half-Well 半邊井, a well deliberately built half inside a wall and half outside so that neighbors without one could still draw water; and the doorway plaques naming each family's ancestral place. The half-well is the single best story in Lukang for a classroom — generosity built into architecture.

其實就是埔頭街與瑤林街。有兩樣東西值得特地找，而不只是走過去：半邊井—— 一口刻意一半築在牆內、一半在牆外的井，好讓沒有井的鄰居也能取水；以及門楣上標示各家祖籍的堂號。 半邊井是鹿港最適合帶進教室的一個故事——把慷慨蓋進建築裡。

4. Breast-Touching Lane 摸乳巷

A famously narrow alley — narrow enough that two adults cannot pass without turning sideways, which is where the cheerful name comes from. Worth two minutes and a photograph. Given the name, this is one to mention to your students carefully, or not at all.

一條出了名的窄巷——窄到兩個大人不側身就過不去，那個俏皮的名字就是這麼來的。值得花兩分鐘拍張照。 不過就那個名字而言，要跟學生講就得小心措辭，或者乾脆不提。

Section 04What to eat

Lukang is a food town, and the food is coastal. Four things to try, in rough order of how likely you are to love them:

鹿港是個吃的地方，而且吃的是海線的東西。四樣值得試，大致依你會喜歡的機率排序：

• Oyster omelette 蚵仔煎 — the national snack, and better here because the oysters come from the coast twenty minutes away. 蚵仔煎——全國性的小吃，在這裡更好吃，因為蚵仔來自二十分鐘車程外的海邊。
• Thin noodle soup 麵線糊 — thickened, savory, eaten with a spoon rather than chopsticks. Cheap and everywhere. 麵線糊——勾芡、鹹口，用湯匙吃而不是筷子。便宜，而且到處都有。
• Ox-tongue biscuits 牛舌餅 — no ox involved; they are named for the shape. The standard thing to bring back for your office. 牛舌餅——跟牛沒有關係，是因為形狀得名。帶回辦公室分同事的標準伴手禮。
• Phoenix-eye cake 鳳眼糕 — a very dry, very sweet pressed cake, an old Lukang specialty. Try one before buying a box. 鳳眼糕——非常乾、非常甜的壓製糕點，鹿港的老字號特產。先試一個再決定要不要買一盒。

Bringing something back for the office is not optional politeness in a Taiwanese school — it is how you say I thought about you while I was away. A box of ox-tongue biscuits on the office table buys more goodwill than it costs.

在台灣的學校，帶伴手禮回辦公室不是可有可無的客套，而是在說「我不在的時候有想到你們」。 辦公桌上一盒牛舌餅換到的善意，遠超過它的價錢。

Section 06Taking it back to the classroom

You are not a tourist; you are a teacher who lives here. The difference is what you do with the trip on Monday. Three things that need no preparation:

你不是觀光客，你是住在這裡的老師。差別在於星期一你拿這趟旅行做什麼。三件不必準備的事：

1. Show four photographs and let them tell you. Your students know Lukang better than you do. Handing them the expert role in English is worth more than a vocabulary list. 秀四張照片，讓他們告訴你。學生比你懂鹿港。用英語把「專家」的角色交給他們，價值超過一張單字表。
2. Ask them to teach you one food word. They will correct your tones and enjoy it enormously, and you will actually remember the word. 請他們教你一個食物的詞。他們會糾正你的聲調而且樂在其中，而你真的會記住那個詞。
3. Use the half-well as a discussion prompt. "Why would someone build half of their well outside their own wall?" That question works at every level from grade three to junior high. 用半邊井當討論題。「為什麼有人要把自己的井蓋一半在牆外？」這個問題從三年級到國中都成立。

And tell your co-teacher you went. It is a small thing, and it is the kind of small thing that makes the conversations in the co-teaching pack easier to start.
