Chapter 03 · 第三章

Changhua City
on Foot

About 11 minutes. Six self-check questions at the end. Nothing on this page is recorded or uploaded.

You have already been here. Changhua Station is where you change buses for Lukang, and where you pass through on the way to almost anywhere else. What almost nobody realizes is that three of the county's best things are within walking distance of the platform you were standing on.

Section 01The roundhouse — plan the day around this one

The Changhua Roundhouse 扇形車庫 is a fan-shaped locomotive depot: twelve stalls radiating from a turntable, with engines rotated into place one at a time. It has been working for about a century, and it is the only surviving fan-shaped roundhouse in Taiwan. It is not a museum reconstruction. It is a functioning railway facility that lets you stand and watch.

This is where trips go wrong — read before you set a date

Entry is free, but the opening pattern catches people out: closed on Mondays, weekday afternoons only, and open from the morning on weekends and public holidays. On arrival one person from your group registers names at the office. Guided tours exist but are for groups of ten or more and must be applied for well in advance — as an individual you simply walk in and look.

Confirm the current hours on the county tourism site before you go; opening arrangements at a working railway facility can change.

Note what this means in practice: the roundhouse and Lukang Old Street are both shut on Mondays. If Monday is your only free day, Changhua County is telling you to stay home and rest.

Section 02Bagua Mountain and the Great Buddha

The Great Buddha 八卦山大佛 sits above the city on Bagua Plateau, completed in 1961 and for a time described as the largest Buddha statue in East Asia. You can walk up from the city; the climb is short by the standards of anywhere else in Taiwan, because Changhua is the lowest-lying county on the island and this is the only real height in it.

From the top you can see the whole Changhua plain — and on a clear day, the flat land running west toward the coast you visited in chapter 2. It is the single best way to understand the shape of the county you are working in.

One piece of history, handled carefully

In 1895, when Taiwan was ceded to Japan, this hill was the site of one of the largest battles fought on the island. Local people know this; there are memorials on the hill. It is worth knowing so that you understand why the place matters to people here.

It is also a subject where a foreign teacher is far better off asking than offering views. Let your colleagues and your students tell you what it means to them — the history of this period is discussed in more than one way in Taiwan, and listening is the professional choice.

Section 03The Confucian Temple

Changhua Confucian Temple 彰化孔子廟 was founded in 1726, three years after the county itself was established, and it is a designated national historic site. If you have been to the temples in Lukang, come here for the contrast — and the contrast is the point.

A folk temple (Lukang Mazu)

  • Incense, offerings, divination blocks, noise.
  • People come to ask for something.
  • Statues of deities as the focus.

A Confucian temple

  • Quiet, restrained, almost empty by comparison.
  • Historically a school as much as a place of ritual.
  • Tablets with names rather than statues — the focus is a teacher, not a god.

For a teacher, that last line is worth sitting with. The county's name comes from the phrase 建學立師以彰雅化 — "establish schools and teachers, so that refined civilization may be made visible." The place you work was named after the idea that teaching is what makes a civilization visible. That is not a bad thing to remember on a difficult Wednesday.

Section 04What to eat

  • Changhua meatball 彰化肉圓 — the city's signature dish and genuinely different from the versions elsewhere in Taiwan. A chewy translucent skin around pork, served with a sweet-savory sauce. Try it here before you form an opinion about bawan.
  • Braised pork rice 爌肉飯 — a thick slab of braised pork belly over rice. Changhua's version is a local institution, and it is what people here eat when they are hungry rather than when they are being tourists.
  • Cat-mouse noodles 貓鼠麵 — no cats and no mice; the shop's founder had a nickname. Old, famous, and a good story to tell your students.

Section 06Taking it back to the classroom

  1. The turntable is a physics lesson that turns. Why rotate the engine instead of building a loop? Ask that question before you give the answer; it works at every level.
  2. Use the view from Bagua Mountain as a map. Show a photograph from the top and ask students to point out where their own township is. Geography stops being abstract the moment they can see their own house from a picture.
  3. Tell them what the county's name means. Most students have never been told that 彰化 is a sentence about teachers. Coming from the foreign teacher, it lands differently.

That completes this pack. Three trips, all reachable, all within an hour of where you teach. The only remaining step is the one no web page can do for you.

Check yourself

Six questions. Nothing here is scored, saved, or seen by anyone else.

Q1.You have a free Monday and want to see the roundhouse and Lukang Old Street. What does the chapter say?
C. The roundhouse is closed Mondays and much of Lukang Old Street is too. If Monday is your only free day, the county is telling you to rest.
Q2.You are visiting the roundhouse alone on a Wednesday. What do you need to do?
A. Entry is free; weekdays are afternoons only; one person registers names at the office. The fourteen-day application is for guided tours, which are for groups of ten or more — as an individual you just walk in.
Q3.What makes the Changhua Roundhouse worth a special trip?
D. Twelve stalls radiating from a turntable, about a century old, and not a reconstruction — a functioning railway facility you are allowed to stand and watch.
Q4.A student asks you what you think about the 1895 fighting on Bagua Mountain. What is the professional response?
B. Know the history so you understand why the place matters here. But this period is discussed in more than one way in Taiwan, and a foreign teacher is far better off asking than offering views. C dodges a real question that a student trusted you with; B answers it.
Q5.How does a Confucian temple differ from a folk temple like Lukang Mazu?
C. Tablets with names rather than statues of deities; people do not come to ask for something. Changhua's own name — 建學立師以彰雅化 — is a sentence about establishing schools and teachers.
Q6.Which classroom follow-up does this chapter recommend for the view from Bagua Mountain?
A. Geography stops being abstract the moment a child can find their own house in a picture. It needs no preparation and no budget — just the photograph you already took.
