Wanlai opened in 1974 as a branch campus of Beidou Elementary School and became an independent school in 1982. Its name honors Mr. Yang Wanlai, an overseas Chinese benefactor living in Japan who bought the land to build the school — and who later gave a concert piano, half the cost of the music classrooms, and the school gate.
萬來於民國 63 年（1974）設立為北斗國小萬來分校，民國 71 年（1982）獨立設校。校名是為了感念旅日華僑楊萬來先生購地建校；之後他又陸續捐贈演奏型鋼琴、音樂教室（逸志堂）半數經費，以及學校校門。
Today, Wanlai's school-designed curriculum grows out of Beidou's own landscape, culture, and community — from hometown walks and rice-food lessons to coding, logic games, the moon lute, and English woven into everyday school life.
今天的萬來，依據北斗在地的地理環境、人文特色與產業，規劃出自己的校訂課程——從家鄉走讀、米食文化，到程式設計、邏輯遊戲、月琴，以及融入校園日常的英語。

Wanlai links its three-part vision directly to its school-designed flexible curriculum. Drawing on Beidou's geography, culture, and local economy, the school has planned five signature themes that bring the vision into children's everyday learning.
萬來國小在課程設計上，將「微笑學習、健康舞動、自信展能」三大願景與校訂彈性學習課程緊密結合。學校依據北斗鎮當地的地理環境、人文特色與經濟條件，規劃出五大校訂特色主題，讓願景落實於孩子的日常學習中。
Hometown Walks & Food Education
Learning goes outdoors. Younger grades walk the streets of old Beidou to meet its history and people, while middle and upper grades study the local rice-food culture and get hands-on with food and farming — joyful learning in real settings.
Logic & Reasoning
Fun logic games and brainstorming replace dull rote memorization. As children solve puzzles and think things through, they discover the smile — and the sense of achievement — that comes with real understanding.
Active Clubs & After-School Activities
Clubs such as hit-song MV dance, badminton, and karate get students moving and working up a sweat on a regular basis — in the morning before class and after school.
Healthy Habits in Practice
Balanced eating — saying no to sugary drinks and drinking more water — and regular exercise are built into daily routines, with role-play and real-life scenarios that teach children to look after their own health.

Talent Shows & Stages for All
School events, festivals, and the graduation season give every child a stage — like the sixth graders' talent showcase and class dance performances — so students strong in academics, the arts, or sports can all share their work with pride.
The moon lute (月琴) is a round, two-stringed Taiwanese instrument — the heart of our folk-music club. Children learn to play and sing old Taiwanese songs, building a love for their mother tongue along the way. Our young players don't just perform at school — they bring their music to community care centers, temple fairs, and town festivals across Beidou, sharing warmth with their neighbors.
月琴是一種圓身雙絃的台灣傳統樂器，也是萬來音樂社團的核心。孩子們學習彈奏與吟唱閩南語歌謠，在樂聲中愛上自己的母語。小小演奏家不只在校內表演——他們把樂音帶到社區關懷據點、廟會與北斗的地方節慶，將溫暖分享給鄉里。
