"Drop, cover, and hold on!" Taiwan marks National Disaster Prevention Day every September 21, in memory of the 921 Earthquake of 1999. This year, every student and teacher at Jhutang Elementary took part in an earthquake drill — practicing how to evacuate safely and how to help someone who gets hurt. To get ready, the school held a practice run one week earlier, on September 14.
Protect your head. Follow your teacher.
When the drill began, students took cover under their desks to protect their heads and necks. When the shaking stopped, they held their books over their heads, lined up, and followed their teachers along the hallways and down the stairs to the assembly area outside — calm and in good order.
At the assembly area, teachers counted their students and reported back. Close by, a first aid station was ready to help. Then the search-and-rescue team went out to check the buildings. On the stairs they found a "hurt" student, checked on the student, and brought them to the first aid station in a wheelchair. Even the youngest children joined in, wearing bright orange safety hoods.
Practice makes us ready. Jhutang hopes that if a real disaster ever comes, every student will stay calm, do the right things, keep themselves safe — and help the people around them.
「趴下、掩護、穩住！」每年 9 月 21 日是國家防災日，紀念 1999 年的 921 大地震。今年防災日，竹塘國小全校師生配合演練地震避難疏散與受傷救護；為了讓正式演練更順利，學校在一週前（9 月 14 日）先進行預演，讓每位孩子熟悉步驟與路線。
演練開始，孩子們立刻躲到桌子底下，保護頭部和頸部；搖晃停止後，大家拿起課本護住頭部，在老師帶領下排隊沿著走廊、走下樓梯，冷靜有秩序地前往戶外集合點。
抵達集合點後，各班老師清點人數並回報；一旁的緊急救護站也已就位待命。接著搜救隊出動巡查校舍，在樓梯間發現一名「受傷」的同學，經過初步檢查後，用輪椅護送到救護站。年紀最小的小朋友也戴上橘色防災頭套，跟著老師一起完成疏散。
平時多演練，危急時才能從容應對。希望透過這次演練，孩子們在災害真正來臨時能保持冷靜、做出正確的動作，保護自己，也照顧身邊的人。
