On the morning of September 30, we were honored to welcome Teacher Wu Min-tsui (吳敏翠) to introduce our students to Nanguan (南管), a traditional style of music with deep roots in Lukang.

Teacher Wu plays with Lukang's Juying Society Nanguan Ensemble (聚英社). She also teaches Nanguan through the Changhua County Cultural Affairs Bureau's heritage programs — including a class at Erlin Prison — and leads Nanguan programs at Lujiang International School and Xishi Elementary School in Fushing Township.
She brought a whole table of instruments: the pipa (琵琶), the sanxian (三弦), the dongxiao flute (洞簫), the pai clappers (拍), the xiangzhan and jiaoluo gongs (響盞、叫鑼), the sikuai (四塊), the aizai (噯仔) and more — and walked students through the basics of Nanguan music theory.

Teacher Wu even brought a deck of Nanguan playing cards published by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, so students could learn about the music — and what makes each instrument special — through a card game.

To finish, everyone learned to read Nanguan's unique gongche notation (工尺譜) — and used it to sing "Mary Had a Little Lamb" together! Two class periods flew by, full of new and surprising experiences.
