Walking Lukang: A Lesson You Can Touch

Some lessons cannot be taught inside four walls. This time, Fusing students put down their textbooks and walked straight into the old lanes of Lukang — and found that history was already waiting for them there.

Our warmest thanks go to Ms. Hsu Hui-wen and Ms. Cheng Chiu-lan of Shanhang 29 Studio (杉行29工作室), and to Ms. Chen Wen-yu of Lushui Caotang (鹿水草堂). Walking the class through old houses, narrow streets and neighborhood stories, they opened a window onto life in Lukang during the Second World War — the sirens, the shelters, and the ordinary days in between.

When the words printed in a textbook suddenly stand in front of your eyes — a scarred wall, a quiet memorial stone, a doorway that survived the bombing — history stops being a date to memorize. It becomes warm. It becomes a picture you can keep.

Between the stops, the lanes themselves were half the lesson. They are too narrow for a tour bus and too full of stories to hurry through, so the town gets around them the old way — on foot, or squeezed together on one of the little electric pedicabs that still work these streets.

The students also made scented incense tags with their own hands: learning what goes into the mixture, pressing and shaping it in a mold, and finally holding up a small piece that belonged to nobody but themselves. Every pair of hands dusted with spice, every delighted smile — that is what real learning looks like.

Education is at its best when children step out of the classroom, find stories in the ground under their feet, feel a culture instead of reading about it, and build confidence by making something real.
