From a village schoolhouse to a beloved community anchor
Before 1950, children from the villages of Erchong, Pixia, Pijiao, and Wufeng had to walk forty to fifty minutes through muddy lanes to reach the nearest school. Local community elders — among them Huang San-jing and Huang Wen-cha — donated land and raised funds to change that. By September 1950, the first branch classes opened; in 1957, Fengshya Elementary School was born.
The name Fengshya (鳳霞) carries the stories of two villages: 鳳 from Wufeng, 霞 from Pixia. Sixty-nine years later, the school remains the heart of this community — small in size, deep in roots.
"In 1966, Fengshya became the first school in Changhua County to launch a school lunch program — using a repurposed Japanese-era warehouse."
