English Practice Corner 英語練習角 · 下課十分鐘的英文

A drop-in spot — usually a corner near the FET's office — where any student can have a 60-second English chat during recess. Low stakes, high frequency. The goal isn't to teach; it's to make speaking English feel like a normal thing to do at school.

Four pieces of a working corner 一個有效角落的四個元件

The four pieces below assemble into a sustainable practice corner. The corner runs on the FET's energy, so keep it modest in scope — better to do less, reliably, than more, sporadically.

Activity 01

Setting Up the Corner · 角落設定

What it is · 做法

Find a corner near the FET's office or a high-traffic area like the library entrance. A small sign, two chairs, and a 'prompt of the week' card are enough. No registration, no schedule.

20 minutes is the magic number — long enough for 4-5 student conversations, short enough that the FET doesn't burn out. Better to do this 3x/week reliably than 5x/week unevenly.

20 prompt cards on a ring — questions like 'What did you eat for breakfast?', 'If you could fly, where would you go?', 'What's a small thing that made you smile this week?' Rotate one per day.

Mix easy and hard prompts. The easy ones get shy students through the door; the hard ones reward those who come back. Don't sort prompts by difficulty on the card itself — let chance decide.

Five lightweight habits that make the corner feel safe — greet by name when you can, reference last week's chat, listen twice as much as you speak, never correct grammar unprompted, end with a warm send-off.

五個讓角落感覺安全的小習慣——能叫名字就叫名字、提到上次聊過的事、聽比說多兩倍、不主動糾文法、結尾要熱情送別。

If a student says 'I goed to the store,' do NOT correct them in the moment. Note it mentally and weave 'went' into your next 3 sentences. They will absorb without embarrassment.

如果學生說「I goed to the store」,當下千萬不要糾正。記在心裡,接下來三句話自然多用「went」幾次。學生會吸收,但不會被羞辱。

When the FET is in a class or absent: a small basket of self-service materials — tongue twisters laminated cards, joke-of-the-week sheet, two short reading passages, a 'leave a message for our FET' notebook.

外師上課中或請假時,提供一籃自助材料——繞口令過塑卡、本週笑話、兩段短文、「留言給外師」筆記本。

Tongue twister card: She sells sea shells by the sea shore. (Try this 3 times fast!)
Joke of the week: Why don't scientists trust atoms? — Because they make up everything!
Reading passage: Did you know that octopuses have three hearts? Two pump blood to the gills, and the third pumps blood to the rest of the body.
Notebook prompt: Tell our FET about your favorite movie. We will read your message together this Friday.

The notebook is the secret weapon. Students often write more bravely than they speak. The FET reads aloud the best entries each Friday — public praise without putting the student on the spot.
