The Story of Anna Jarvis

Anna Jarvis

Mother's Day started in the United States in 1908. A woman named Anna Jarvis wanted to honor her own mother, who had spent years caring for sick people during the American Civil War. Anna held the first Mother's Day at a small church in West Virginia, and gave white carnations to every mother who came — because carnations were her own mother's favorite flowers.

The idea spread quickly. In 1914, the U.S. President made the second Sunday of May an official holiday for all mothers across the country. Today, more than 50 countries celebrate Mother's Day on this same day.

In Taiwan, families give carnations on Mother's Day — pink for moms who are still with us, white in memory of those who have passed away. Children make cards, cook breakfast in bed, or simply say two of the most important words in any language: "Thank you, Mom."
