A long, long time ago, there were not one but ten suns in the sky. The earth was burning, and the people were dying of heat. A brave hero named Hou Yi raised his bow and shot down nine of the suns, leaving just the one we still see today.
For saving the world, the Queen of Heaven gave Hou Yi a special medicine that would make him live forever. But Hou Yi loved his wife Chang'e so much that he could not bear to leave her behind. So he hid the medicine at home.
One day, a thief broke in while Hou Yi was away. To stop the thief from stealing the medicine, Chang'e quickly drank it herself. She became so light that she floated up — up, up, all the way to the moon. Hou Yi was heartbroken. Every year on the night the moon is most round, he set out his wife's favorite foods under the sky — and Chinese families still do the same thing today.
