The Eight-Eight Story

In Mandarin Chinese, the word for "Dad" (爸 ) sounds almost the same as the number "8" (八 ). So on August 8 — eight-eight — Taiwan celebrates Father's Day. It is a special day to thank Dad for his hard work, his quiet patience, and the way he looks after the family.

The idea of an "Eight-Eight Father's Day" started in Shanghai in 1945. It was a clever way to remember the day, and it spread quickly to Taiwan. In other parts of the world, Father's Day falls on different days — for example, in the United States it is the third Sunday of June. But for Taiwanese kids, "Eight-Eight" is the day to give Dad a big hug.

Today, Father's Day in Taiwan is a quiet, simple kind of celebration. Many families take Dad out for dinner, write him a card, or just spend the day together at home. Some dads work hard six days a week — so even one hour of their children's time can mean the world.
