The Earth has been a home for plants, animals, and people for billions of years. But in the last hundred years, our planet has been getting sick. The water, the air, and the land are full of plastic, smoke, and trash. This is called pollution.
In 1970, an American senator named Gaylord Nelson saw how bad the pollution was getting. He had a big idea — what if we picked one day every year to remind everyone to take care of the Earth? On April 22, 1970, twenty million people in America walked together, planted trees, and cleaned up rivers.
Today, Earth Day is celebrated in more than 190 countries. Every April 22, kids and grown-ups around the world plant trees, pick up trash, and learn how to be kinder to our only home — the planet we all share.
