Why this season is really about kindness, not just gifts.
Christmas is celebrated on December 25 by people all around the world. For Christian families, it is the day they remember the birth of Jesus, who they believe was born in a small stable in Bethlehem about 2,000 years ago.
The Christmas tree tradition started in Germany in the 1500s, when families brought small pine trees indoors and decorated them with apples and candles. Today, every Christmas house has a tall green tree, bright lights, gifts under the branches, and a star on top.
Children also wait for Santa Claus — a jolly old man in a red coat who, the story goes, flies around the world on a sleigh pulled by reindeer, delivering presents to good children. He climbs down the chimney and fills the stockings hanging by the fireplace.
In Taiwan, Christmas is not a national holiday, but every school holds a Christmas party, and the streets fill with twinkling lights, Christmas songs, and the warm smell of hot cocoa.
