Chapter 03 · 第三章

Behavior in Someone
Else's Classroom

About 12 minutes. Six self-check questions at the end. Nothing on this page is recorded or uploaded.

Nearly all the advice you will find about managing a class assumes the class is yours. Yours is not. You are not the homeroom teacher, you see these children for forty minutes a week, you do not share a first language with them, and the adult who actually has the relationship is standing three meters away. That is a different job, and it needs different advice.

Section 01What you actually have, and what you do not

What you do not have

  • Daily contact, so no accumulated relationship to spend.
  • A shared first language for the one sentence that would settle it.
  • A place in the school's discipline system.
  • A line to the parents.
  • Time — whatever you spend on behavior comes out of a forty-minute lesson.

What you do have

你有的

  • Control over the design of the lesson, which is where most of it starts.
  • Novelty — you are the interesting thing that happens this week.
  • A colleague in the room who has every one of the things in the left column.

Read those two columns together and the strategy writes itself: your leverage is not authority. It is design, and it is your co-teacher. Every approach that depends on being the person who can impose consequences is going to fail, slowly, and take your energy with it.

Section 02Most of it is a design symptom

Before you treat behavior as behavior, check whether you built it. In a language class the three reliable manufacturers of misbehavior are:

  • They cannot start. The instruction did not land — that is chapter 2, and it shows up as noise within ninety seconds.
  • They finished three minutes ago. No extension task, so they invent one. Usually it involves their neighbor.
  • The task does not need them. One student in the group is doing everything — that is chapter 1, and the other three are not being naughty, they are being unemployed.

Fixing any of those three removes more disruption than any amount of standing over people. It is also the only part of this that is entirely within your control.

Section 03Draw the line before you need it

The single most valuable conversation in this chapter takes five minutes and almost nobody has it. Ask your co-teacher, in advance, in the corridor: "When a student will not stop, do you want me to handle it, or hand it to you?"

Ask it once, at the start of a semester, and you will never again have the worst version of this — the version where you both step in at the same moment and contradict each other in front of the class, or where you both wait and nobody does anything. A rough division that works in most Changhua classrooms:

  1. Yours: pace, clarity, who sits with whom during your activity, low-level off-task chat, and all of the praise.
  2. Shared: repeated disruption, a conflict between two students, a child who is having a bad day.
  3. Theirs: anything that touches school policy, a record, a consequence, or a parent.
  4. Never yours alone: anything involving a child's safety, bullying, or harm. That is not a judgment call and it is not yours to manage — report it to your co-teacher and the school immediately, the same day. The regulations reference in School Culture is there for exactly this.

Section 04Escalate slowly, and quietly

The ladder below works because each rung is cheaper than the one after it, and because the first three cost the student nothing in front of their classmates. Go up one rung at a time.

  1. Move. Walk over and stand near them, still teaching. This alone ends most of it, and nobody else notices.
  2. Pause. Stop talking. A room notices silence faster than it notices volume.
  3. Look, then name the behavior, not the child. "English, please" beats "Ming, stop talking" — one is a redirection, the other is a public label.
  4. Speak to them privately while the class is working, at their desk, quietly.
  5. Hand it over, in the way the two of you agreed in section 3.

Two things that cost more here than where you trained

Face. Correcting a student loudly in front of the class buys you compliance today and costs you that child for the rest of the year, and often their friends too. Correct privately; praise publicly. The asymmetry is the point.

Never contradict your co-teacher in front of the students. Whatever you disagree about — and you will disagree — the students must not be able to tell. A class that sees the two adults out of step will find the gap and use it, usually within a week.

Section 05The part nobody tells you

Being the foreign teacher means the class is a little different when you walk in — livelier, louder, more excited. Some of what reads as bad behavior in your lesson is simply that. It is worth checking with your co-teacher whether the class you find difficult is a difficult class, or a normal class being unusually awake.

And the reverse is also worth knowing: a class that is completely silent for you is not necessarily a well-behaved class. In a language lesson it may be a class that has learned not to risk speaking. That is a harder problem than noise, and it does not belong in this chapter — it belongs in chapter 1.

What the research does not say

Classroom management research is large, but almost all of it studies a teacher who owns the class, shares a language with the students, and sees them every day. Very little of it was built on your situation. Treat this chapter as a way of thinking about your position rather than a set of proven techniques — and treat anyone selling a universal discipline system for a once-a-week foreign teacher with suspicion.

Section 06Three sentences to take into next week

  1. Your leverage is design and your co-teacher, not authority. Anything that depends on imposing consequences will fail slowly.
  2. Ask the five-minute question this week: handle it, or hand it to you?
  3. Correct privately, praise publicly, and never contradict your co-teacher in front of the class.

Check yourself

Six situations. Nothing here is scored, saved, or seen by anyone else.

Q1.Where does an FET's real leverage over behavior come from?
C. You have no daily contact, no place in the discipline system and no line to parents — so anything that depends on being the person who imposes consequences fails slowly and takes your energy with it. What you do control is the task, and the colleague standing three meters away who has all of those things.
Q2.Three students in a group are off task while one does all the work. What is this?
A. The task did not need them. Split the information and announce that you pick the reporter — chapter 1. Fixing the design removes more disruption than any amount of standing over people, and it is the only part entirely within your control.
Q3.What is the five-minute conversation to have with your co-teacher at the start of a semester?
D. Ask it once and you never again get the worst version — both of you stepping in at the same moment and contradicting each other in front of the class, or both waiting while nobody acts.
Q4.A student keeps chatting during your activity. What is the first rung of the ladder?
B. Proximity ends most of it, costs the student nothing in front of their classmates, and nobody else even notices. Go up one rung at a time: move, pause, name the behavior not the child, speak privately, then hand over.
Q5.You strongly disagree with how your co-teacher just handled a student. What do you do?
A. A class that sees the two adults out of step will find the gap and use it, usually within a week. Whatever you disagree about — and you will — the students must not be able to tell. Going over their head first (D) tells your co-teacher you do not talk to them.
Q6.A student tells you something that suggests another child is being bullied. What is your role?
D. Anything involving a child's safety, bullying or harm is not a judgment call and is not yours to manage. Report, do not handle — the same day. The regulations reference in School Culture exists for exactly this.
