Running
the Room

The other three packs are about your co-teacher, the county you live in, and the materials you make. This one is about the forty minutes themselves — twenty-something children, one room, and whatever you decided to do with them. It is the part nobody trained most foreign teachers for, and the part that decides whether the lesson you planned is the lesson that happens.

Why this is its own pack

Grouping, instructions and behavior kept turning up as footnotes in the other packs — a line in the co-teaching chapters about who handles order, a line in the worksheet chapter about the first ninety seconds. They are not footnotes. They are the largest single thing standing between a good plan and a good lesson, so they get their own place.

Not classroom management in the abstract

There is no shortage of general advice about managing a class. What there is very little of is advice for someone who is not the homeroom teacher, does not share a first language with the children, sees each class once a week, and shares the room with a colleague who has the relationship. That is the situation these chapters are written for.
