Dom Jones Visits Nanzhen: A Lesson on Life Below Water

On September 22, coordinated by My Culture Connect, Nanzhen Elementary School welcomed Dom Jones, winner of UNA’s 2024 Young Leader of the Year Award. Principal Wang greeted the visitors with tea in his office.

Dom sat down with Principal Wang, a principal for twenty-three years, to talk about how Nanzhen helps its students learn English. “Working with children,” he said, “keeps your heart young and innocent forever.”

Dom 與擔任校長二十三年的王校長對談，聊聊南鎮如何幫助孩子學英語。校長說：「跟孩子一起工作，就能永遠保持天真和年輕的心。」

Nanzhen wants its children to meet English early. A full-time English teacher and a foreign teaching assistant work side by side — and today, Dom joined them.

南鎮希望孩子及早接觸英語。專任英語老師與外籍助理教師攜手教學——今天，Dom 也加入了他們。

The topic: life below water. How much of the air we breathe comes from the ocean? Then everyone was on their feet. Hands went up, students came to the board, and shared what they want to protect: white dolphins, flowers, friends. Every answer began with “I want to protect.”

今天的主題：海洋生態。我們呼吸的空氣，有多少來自海洋？接著，全班都站了起來。手舉起來，走上黑板，說出自己想守護的東西：白海豚、花朵、朋友——每個答案都從「我想守護」開始。

Principal Wang believes that children who grow up with English, and with a teacher from abroad, will one day step into the world with confidence. Thank you, Nanzhen — on to the next school!

The interactive lesson followed SDG 14: Life Below Water. Classes 6A and 6B learned how to protect the ocean and the creatures that live in it — and how to care for Tianwei, the hometown they love.
