Bagua Mountain & Great Buddha八卦山與大佛
Standing 22 meters tall atop Bagua Mountain, the Great Buddha has watched over Changhua City since 1961. The hilltop park offers sweeping views across the Changhua Plain and is one of Taiwan's most recognizable landmarks. Inside the statue, visitors can explore exhibits on Buddhist history spread across multiple floors.
Changhua Confucian Temple彰化孔廟
Founded in 1726 during the Qing Dynasty, Changhua's Confucian Temple is the second-oldest in Taiwan — only the grand temple in Tainan predates it. The elegant multi-courtyard complex features traditional red-beam architecture and intricate wood carvings. Every September, a spectacular dawn ceremony honors Confucius on his birthday.
Changhua Roundhouse扇形車庫
Built in 1922 during the Japanese colonial era, the Changhua Roundhouse is the only surviving fan-shaped locomotive depot in Taiwan and a beloved piece of industrial heritage. A massive turntable at its center still rotates steam and diesel locomotives today. Early-morning visitors can sometimes watch train mechanics at work in this open-air museum.
Lai Ho Memorial Hall賴和紀念館
Lai Ho (1894–1943), known as the "Father of Taiwanese New Literature," was born and practiced medicine in Changhua City. His former clinic has been lovingly restored into a memorial hall that tells the story of his literary legacy, his compassion for patients regardless of their ability to pay, and his resistance to colonial injustice. A must-visit for anyone interested in Taiwanese cultural history.
Yuanqing Temple元清觀
One of the oldest and most respected Taoist temples in Changhua County, Yuanqing Temple has served the local community for over 300 years. Dedicated to the Supreme Emperor of the Dark Heaven (玄天上帝), the temple's richly decorated halls are filled with intricate stone carvings, colorful ceramic sculptures, and the scent of incense. Festival celebrations here draw worshippers from across central Taiwan.
